I believe that the peer editing activity definitely benefited me because it gave others an opportunity to comment on what they felt I could improve on and what they personally found lacking in my essay. For example, it was clear to me what I was trying to argue, but through the peer editing feedback I realized that I needed to be more straightforward and clear with my points. I also realized that I had a good amount of summary at the beginning, and that made me realize why others found my argument to be unclear. I am currently working on including more analysis and argument to make my main purpose and important points clearer.
I also feel that through editing other people’s papers, I now know how to better analyze quotes in my own essay. In the two essays I read, I could see how including quotes disrupted their flow of thought, and this made me realize that incorporating a quote is especially important in maintaining the papers flow. It is not enough to just include it as evidence, but as writers we must actively work it into the argument so the flow of the essay is maintained and not disruptive. In addition we must also expand and analyze the quotes in context of our own argument. Overall, I think this peer review activity definitely made me a better writer and definitely helped me learn a few new strategies to make my essay more powerful.
