As a pharmacy student, I need to
take this course because it is required as a way to communicate ideas
efficiently. My best reason for why I shouldn’t have to take this course is
that I’ve taken the AP Language class and I’m qualified to skip this course.
After reading the preface of the book, I realized that the essays I wrote in
high school were always structured the same way-an intro, 3 body paragraphs,
and a conclusion- in a total of 5 paragraphs. However, that is a high school
level of writing. I hope to be able to make the connection across disciplines
and someday create new ideas that could bring a new perspective to others.
I believe that “to use writing as a way of
thinking new thoughts” implies that we should use the texts of others and
combine that with our unique perspectives and personal experiences to result in
a new way of thinking. The “shared horizon” is when we bring together the perspectives
of different texts to form a new idea. This is important because many of world
problems today are multidimensional and require interdisciplinary solutions.
For example, global warming cannot just be solved with environmentalists, but
also need the input of politicians, social leaders, and scientists. I believe
that the quote, “If the humanities are going to survive, they must be
understood in a new way: not as a particular area of knowledge but as the human
dimension of all knowledge.”, best represents the New Humanities because it
says that we shouldn’t be thinking of humanities as only the arts represented
by Shakespeare, Orwell, and other great people, but also as the connecting link
across disciplines. Through humanities, we can combine the sciences with
history and art as well as our individual personal experiences.
