The key words in this passage are "crowdsourcing",“formal education”, “expertise”, and “credentialing” (Davidson 51). Formal education is thought of as the path to success; however, the unconventional learning methods of Mrs Davidson proved to be just as successful, if not better than the formal education pushed by Ichabod Crane (Davidson 65). Expertise is the goal of formal education. Credentialing is how we label success. A person is judged by his or her achievements. Crowdsourcing is essentially the opposite of credentialing in that the opinions of many are valued equally rather than one expert's opinion being more valued than a person that does not have certain credentials.
This passage is important to the essay as a whole as it summarizes the idea that education is not indicated by a test score. True knowledge and education come from interest and absorption of the skills needed in life for problem solving. It is a closed-minded approach to education as Davidson states, “the more expert we are, the more likely we are to be limited in what we even conceive to be the problem, let alone the answer,” (Davidson 51). The atypical approaches to learning used by Mrs. Davidson and discovered by the students at Duke showed that a textbook approach to learning is not the only way to garner success.
