In many ways The New Humanities Reader's vision of reading is identical to the reading I have done in the past few years. I have read many passages, essays, reports, and stories that have been put out in front and have formed my own opinions based on those readings. These previous readings giving me reason not to take this course, always being open to new ideas and having new material to expand my mindset gives me and many others a reason to take this course. When writing often times I come up with new ideas and thoughts that never occurred to me before starting an essay, sometimes while writing one idea can lead to another and help me learn from my own thoughts.
The New Humanities Reader talks about the idea of "shared horizon" and from what I took the idea of "shared horizon" means to take the options and beliefs of others and rather than imprinting their ideas into our minds, the readers should take those ideas and use them to shape their own opinions. New Humanities Reader discusses the idea of learning from real world sources and non-fiction to form opinions rather than traditional sources such as Shakespeare. By using these real world ideas rather than trying to follow the single thought of an author our mindset as readers is able to grow larger. What I can take away from this assignment is the idea that rather than following the ideas readings place in front of me I should instead add them to my knowledge and expand my own thoughts.
